Fall On the Rocks, Allstones Canyon
Allstones Canyon is a peaceful location, found right off the David Thompson Highway. With textured & layered rock faces, a variety of vegetation and Allstones Creek tumbling over countless pebbles & stones, it offers a wealth of photographic opportunities. (Or just a pleasing walk up the canyon, soaking in the atmosphere.) Photographing here can be a pursuit for many hours, exploring nooks and crannies that reveal rich details. It helps to bring alternate footwear and to have a willingness to get wet in the creek!
The Fall 2010 Canadian Rockies photo tour group spent a few satisfying hours in the canyon. The red-yellow color of the fall foliage had been taken down a notch or two by several days of heavy wind before we got into the canyon. However there were still pockets of leaves to be found, among the array of other subject material. This was right in line with focusing on tight compositions and details. Here I was able to isolate a spray of bright, colorful leaves against a dark rock face, making use of the lines as well as color & tonal contrast to develop the image.
